The immune system
Very few people get through a year without catching a cold or flu. This is no surprise considering the amount of bugs we are exposed to every day- riding on public transport, shopping, at work etc. But for every infection that you do get, there may be many more that the immune system defeats before you experience any symptoms. Even if you do fall victim to a cold or flu, you are likely to recover more quickly if your immune system is strong.
Because it is difficult to avoid exposure to infection-causing bugs, maintaining a healthy immune system is the primary way to protect yourself against catching colds or flu. Whilst maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise and quality sleep are important, natural remedies and nutritional supplements can also play their part. Herbs such as Echinacea and Andrographis and the important nutrient vitamin C have a long history of use in maintaining healthy immune function and reducing the severity of cold and flu symptoms.
Andrographis
Andrographis is a herb traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for reducing fevers and supporting immune system function. Modern science has confirmed this herb’s effects in a clinical trial involving 208 patients. Andrographis was found to reduce symptoms of the common cold including sore throat, nasal secretion, tiredness, earache and cough.[1]
Echinacea
Echinacea is one of the most commonly used herbal remedies in the world and it might just live up to the hype. A meta-analysis found that Echinacea decreased the risk of a patient developing the common cold by 58%. In those patients who did catch a cold, Echinacea appeared to reduce duration by more than 1 day. [2]
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an essential nutrient for the human body and plays an important role in supporting immune system function. Vitamin C has been shown to stimulate both the production and function of leukocytes (white blood cells) particularly neutrophils, lymphocytes and phagocytes.[3] White blood cells play an important role in attacking foreign bacteria and viruses and thus preventing infection.
Bio-Organics® has come up with two unique formulas to support immune system function, Echinacea 10,000 and Immune Complex with Andrographis.
