What is so good about fish oil?
Years of positive research has turned fish oil into an increasingly popular supplement for many aspects of health, including the heart, joints and brain. But what exactly is so extraordinary about fish and why should we take our daily dose of fish oil?
Fish oil is a natural source of the omega-3 essential fatty acids EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid). These are considered essential because they cannot be produced by the body and must be supplied through the diet. Every living cell in the body needs essential fatty acids. Unfortunately the modern diet is generally low in omega-3 fatty acids, which may contribute to some conditions within the body.
The health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids from fish are well documented and include cardio-vascular system support, anti-inflammatory properties and the maintenance of a healthy brain. In fact, it is becoming increasingly evident that omega-3 fatty acids are important throughout the whole human lifecycle.
Benefits of fish oil:
PREGNANCY AND LACTATION - Omega-3 fatty acids are required for foetal and newborn growth and development.
HEART HEALTH- According to the National Heart Foundation of Australia, all adults should consume at least 500mg of omega-3 fatty acids (combination of EPA and DHA) daily.[1] Omega-3 fatty acids can help maintain a healthy LDL:HDL cholesterol ratio and healthy blood pressure in healthy individuals and support heart health.
JOINT HEALTH- EPA and DHA have anti-inflammatory properties and may be of benefit for inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. A meta-analysis of the use of omega-3 fats for joint pain found that supplementation for three to four months reduced patient-reported joint pain intensity, duration of morning stiffness and number of painful and/or tender joints.[2]
BRAIN HEALTH- Fatty acids are major components of the brain. In fact 2/3 of the brain is made up of fat! Approximately 1/3 of this portion is made up of omega-3 fatty acids, mostly DHA. This highlights the importance of consuming essential fatty acids to help maintain healthy brain function.
Fish Oil supplements- which one is right for me?
There are so many different types of fish oil supplements on the market to cater for just about everyone, from enteric coated capsules to high-strength and liquid. Choosing the right fish oil for your needs can get a little confusing. Enteric Coated fish oil has been designed to eliminate any fishy aftertaste and liquid fish oil has been designed for those who have trouble swallowing capsules, such as the elderly or children. The great thing about BioOrganics Super Liquid Fish Oil is that rather than taking up to 9 standard 1000mg fish oil capsules per day, adults can take 1 teaspoon (5mL) of BioOrganics Super Liquid Fish Oil per day for heart and brain health and be done with it!
Always read the label. Use only as directed. If symptoms persist see your healthcare professional.
